Clayton Opera House

The Clayton Opera House has served the 1000 Islands in many roles for the past 100 years. Upstairs, the Opera House features a wonderful theater capable of accommodating a wide variety of performances and audiences of up to 400. The building’s third floor was the local Masonic Lodge until 1993. The rise in the popularity of the Opera House in the summer months has created a demand for air conditioning, especially during July and August when temperatures typically reach the 80’s and 90’s, and the heat gain from the 400 plus capacity crowds create temperatures within the performing area in excess of 100 degrees. The lack of heat in the building results in the Opera House being shut down for any community use by mid October.  The lack of heat is also a contributing factor to the degradation of the building’s interior and exterior finishes.

Bernier, Carr and Associates, and the Thousand Islands Performing Arts Fund undertook a complete renovation of the structure in 2006.  The renovation included a complete heating and air conditioning system and addition for back stage space with dressing rooms, additional mechanical space and office space on the third floor.  The recent renovation of the structure made it a premier venue for community functions and the performing arts. The work was done in accordance with NYSOPRHP guidelines and received grant funding from NYSOPRHP, NYS Department of State and USDA - Rural Development.
